Shallecheth Gate (שַׁעַר שַׁלֶּכֶת, sha'ar shallekheth). An inner gate of the Jerusalem temple, probably on the western side (1 Chr 26:16). The gate is also known as the “Foundation Gate” (2 Chr 23:5), the “middle gate” (Jer 39:3), and the “Sur Gate” (2 Kgs 11:6). Shallecheth Gate may mean “Gate of Departing,” which has caused some to believe it was a refuse gate. More likely, this gate “on the ascending road” was an entrance, forum, or chamber for priests or royalty (1 Chr 26:16).
